Mental Health Healing - Empath's News Detox
The Power of Prayers and Protecting My Mental Space.
As an empath, I have made a conscious decision to step away from consuming the news. I stopped around my 30th birthday last year when I realised just how deeply I feel things, perhaps more intensely than most people. Every word a news anchor speaks seeps into my soul, carrying the weight of the emotions behind each story. I don't just hear the news; I feel it. The sorrow, the devastation, the fear, it all lingers within me long after the broadcast ends.
In addition to avoiding live news broadcasts, I also stopped reading news blogs, as they often left me feeling drained and deeply saddened. Instead, I rely on my close-knit network to keep me informed about critical events. However, this approach does have its limitations. When Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred was making headlines, my mother knew about it before I did. The warnings issued for South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales were meant to help residents prepare, yet due to my intentional distance from the news, I did not catch up on time. Fortunately, we remained safe and did not experience any shortages of essential supplies.
More recently, I took an intentional step toward further protecting my mental space by undertaking a social media detox. In early March, I deleted my Facebook and Instagram apps to reduce exposure to distressing content and regain a sense of peace. This decision has been incredibly refreshing, allowing me to reclaim my emotional energy and focus on what truly nourishes my soul. While it is impossible to completely avoid news and global events, I still come across snippets on YouTube, and I have been intentional about shifting my response. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I have leaned into prayer and worship.
During this period, I have spent more time in prayer, interceding for those affected by crises, natural disasters, and instability. My prayers have focused on protection, peace, and provision for my family, my community, and those in need across the world.
Recognising the profound impact of prayer on my emotional well-being, I recently launched a new initiative: Peaceful Prayers on YouTube. This space is dedicated to short but powerful prayers designed to provide comfort, calm, encouragement, and spiritual strength to those struggling with anxiety, fear, uncertainty, emotional distress or being overwhelmed. I know firsthand how much I need these prayers, and I hope they serve as a source of strength for you as well.
