So I have witnessed 24 valentines in my lifetime, and this one is the 25th; on my 18th Valentine, it happened to be a Thursday. I had gone out with some guy who was my boyfriend, and we saw some rose sticks being sold in the market, we were shopping for food and groceries.
I know he saw the roses being sold, but as a guy-man, he ignored them. In my very sarcastic way of requesting for things. I asked him to buy one for me, which he did. However, I had to ask. That was many Valentine's ago.
Many years have passed, and I am mostly at work on this auspicious day of love. So, four years after the market Valentine experience, I am 22, living my life, working in the northern part of Nigeria. I like some guys, but some other guy like me; I pay no attention to the one I like, but I am facing the one I like, buying gifts here and there. You know what - I will tell you about him another day, but this time I purchased perfumes from Eau de perfume to some expensive Arabian oil perfumes, for the one I liked or thought I liked; I was so excited about this one Valentine I was almost certain 'uncle' was the one for me.
On getting home that weekend, my mum said a package arrived for me from Jumia. I checked it, and it was from another man, the one I really didn't like much then. This man who was so thoughtful to send me Valentine's gifts even when he hadn't asked me out is my husband today. Many things added up about him. He was chasing me, and I was not chasing him like the other guy.
I tell you this verily: When God says a man and woman are meant to be together, they will eventually be together.
It will be my 3rd Valentine with him, one as his girlfriend and two as his wife. It's funny how time flies, but good memories last forever. I still have gifts from that Valentine's Day when he surprised me silly, even though he says he sent those gifts just as friends would. I am sure he had his eyes on me then. I was a confused young girl who didn't see the signs early, but glory be to God, I saw them eventually, and it was not too late. So to our fourth Valentine together, third actually or first to him, ask him what he means by first when you see him. We say Hurray.
