Sometimes our peers are doing things and achieving great strides, and we should also be doing those things. We always want to win, like some friends and family who always win or seem to be winning, especially on social media.
However, things don’t always go according to our plans, so our wins are sometimes delayed. In that waiting period, we ought to keep ourselves busy with other things, but most of us often sit and compare, putting ourselves in a “rabbit hole”, thereby causing undue pressure.
We must be self-disciplined to say ‘No’ to that spirit of comparison during the waiting period.
Where do undue pressures come from?
Undue pressure can come from various sources, such as watching friends, family, coworkers, or even society. It can be difficult to resist this pressure, especially from someone we think we can be like. But it’s important to remember that we have the right to say no and to set boundaries for ourselves.
Ways to control undue pressures?
Some tips for controlling comparison, which leads to putting ourselves under undue pressure, are:
Limiting social media: Once we can tell ourselves the truth, that it is mostly on social media, we see people sharing their good news, and we tend to begin the comparison from there; we are free as we can limit the usage of social media we will be able to kill comparison from its root
Journalling: It is essential to write down things you have achieved, even minor ones. Write something you are grateful for each day, and you will see that you also win in your way.
Have accountability partners: Your friends, colleagues, spouse or other family members who help keep your growth in check. They allow you to check on things you are working on and ensure that you are on the right track; you could assume things are going south when they are towards the north pole. You need other eyes to see your work or projects sometimes.
Stay grateful: This is closely linked to journalling and having a gratitude jar.
However, you don’t have to wait till the end of the day before you thank God. Staying grateful helps you to be happy, and you won’t even remember to compare yourself with others, leading to undue pressure.
Final Summary
Undue pressure can be curtailed in different ways but its important to note that it stems from comparison. It basically means you do not value yourself, which is not good. It’s important you value yourself and know your limits in all that you do. In doing so, you’ll manage your time effectively and not have time to sit and compare, which then leads to undue pressure.
