You speak English?

Of course, I do; the English colonised us.

You speak English? How come you speak Australian so well? How long have you been here? I have to answer these and many other questions daily. Sometimes, I smile and politely respond, but some days, I am tired from work, and a question like this would definitely not uplift me.

Well, let's say most people from Canada and Australia, where English is generally spoken, seem to think brown-skinned people. cannot speak English as though we were not taught to communicate in English from infancy *laughs in Yoruba*. English is our first official language in Nigeria, and I imagine that is what it is for many African countries. 

English has helped me communicate effectively with people from other countries, and I am glad for the history that has brought me thus far.
